Saint Tikhons Masters students undertake pedagogical work experience in Spain

25 March 2018 marked the end of work experience undertaken in Spain by Masters students on the course Communication in Religious Pedagogical Culture. The work experience was conducted in the International School of Kolbe, which is situated forty kilometres from Madrid in a small locality called Villanueva de la Cañada.

Royal terror in Byzantium

On March 24, 2018, a lecture took place in the Conciliar Chamber of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities on Byzantium: What was Royal Terror? It was the fifth lecture in the series Medieval Studies in the Conciliar Chamber, organized by Saint Tikhons University together with the Department of History of the Higher School of Economics (HSE), and it was given by Professor Sergei Arkadievich Ivanov of HSE.

Saint Tikhons University teacher of languages gives presentation on letters from Palermo archive

On March 21, Maria Yurevna Desyatova, the Chair of the Department of Romance Languages at Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities, delivered a paper at the 47th International Academic Conference in Philology at Saint Petersburg State University with a paper on the topic, Sicilian volgare in 14th-century Private Correspondence (session on Romance and Germanic languages).

Saint Tikhons University teacher Natalia Kulkova appointed to Accademia Ambrosiana in Milan

On March 20, 2018, a formal ceremony took place at the Accademia Ambrosiana (Ambrosian Academy) in Milan, Italy at which the Archbishop of Milan and Chancellor of the Academy, Mario Delpini, awarded a formal diploma to Saint Tikhons University teacher Natalia Alexeevna Kulkova, conferring on her the status of Academician of the Accademia Ambrosiana for Saint Ambrose Studies.

Guest lectures on teaching methods given to Saint Tikhons University students

From March 19-20, 2018, Javier Andreo de la Vega, a teacher of philosophy and religion from Spain, gave lectures to the Department of Teacher Training of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities, as part of an ongoing collaboration between the Faculty of Teacher Training and that of Medieval and Modern Languages. The sessions were attended by students of all specializations from the Departments of Teacher Training and of the Methodology of Primary School Education, as well as that of Romance Languages.

Alexander Marei: Law and Medieval Man

On March 17, 2018, the legal historian Dr Alexander Marei gave a lecture in the main building of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities on Law in the Context of Medieval Culture. It was the fourth lecture in the series entitled Medieval Studies in the Conciliar Chamber and was focused on the formation of codified legal systems in Western Europe.

Lecture on the Last Supper in Western Art

On March 10, 2018, Dr Anna Pozhidaeva of the Higher School of Economics gave a lecture on The Last Supper and the Eucharist in Western European Art from 200-1700 AD: An Overview of Iconographic Types, in the Conciliar Chamber of the Main Building of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities.

Romes Christian identity as a substitute for pagan apotheosis

On March 3, 2018, the historian Dr Andrei Vinogradov gave a lecture in the Conciliar Chamber of the Main Building of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities on The Idea of Rome in Pagan and Christian Antiquity. His lecture, the second in a series organized jointly by Saint Tikhons University and the History Faculty of the Higher School of Economics and called Medieval Studies in the Conciliar Chamber, elaborated on the long evolution of the idea of the city of Rome, from its apotheosis as the Eternal City through to its acquisition of Christian identity.

Saint Tikhons University student wins translation contest

Anastasia Trigher, a fourth-year student of Spanish at Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities, won a competition designed to select Spanish-Russian translators to work at the Football World Cup that will be taking place in Russia in 2018.

Day of Germanic Languages

On February 17, 2018, the Faculty of Modern Languages of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities held a yearly Day of Germanic Languages, which usually takes place during Cheese-fare Week (Maslenitsa). The celebrations included some theatrical performances put on by students and teachers of the Department of Germanic Languages, as well as a report on the outcomes of the exchange programme with England.

Book Launch at Humboldt University

On February 7, 2018, the Humboldt University of Berlin hosted a presentation of the new book Leo Tolstoy: Prophet without Honour. The Chronicle of a Catastrophe, by the Very Rev. Archpriest Dr. Georgy Orehanov, Deputy Rector for International Relations at Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities, as part of the ongoing partnership between Saint Tikhons and the Humboldt University, and with support from the Russian Embassy in Berlin, the Russian Centre for Science and Culture in Berlin, and the Institute of Slavic Studies of the University of Berlin.

12th International Sretensky Readings in Helsinki

On February 4-5, the Russian Cultural Centre in Helsinki, Finland hosted the sessions of the 12th annual International Educational Readings for the Feast of the Meeting of the Lord (Sretenskye Chtenia or Sretensky Readings), organized by the Representation of the Moscow Patriarchate in Finland. This year, the Readings were dedicated to the historical role and spiritual achievements coming from hierarchical (episcopal) service.

28th annual Theological Conference wraps up

The winter session of the 28th annual Theological Conference of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities ran from January 20-27, 2018. This conference, organized by Saint Tikhons University, is a major and authoritative academic forum for the Orthodox Church of Russia and attracts dozens of scholars each year.

Saint Tikhons University programmes attract students from 127 countries

At present, applications for the programmes in Fundamentals of Orthodoxy and Theology are accepted biannually and the number of applications usually far exceeds the number of places. The Institute of Distance Learning usually counts among its graduates 200 students each year, who receive certificates of professional retraining or further education.

On December 3, 2017, the eve of the Feast of the Entry into the Temple of the Most Holy Mother of God as well as of the Centenary of Patriarch Tikhons enthronement, His Holiness Patriarch Kyrill of Moscow and All Russia celebrated a Matins service as apart of an All-Night Vigil in the Church of Saint Vladimir, Prince of Kiev and Equal-to-the-apostles, in Saint Tikhons Universitys main building in Lihov Lane (Moscow).

Oleg Airapetov: The Russian Army during the War and Revolution

On December 1, 2017, as a part of the lecture series at Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities on the 1917 Russian Revolution, Dr. Oleg Airapetov gave a lecture on The Russian Army During the War and the Revolution. Dr. Airapetov, a well-known historian, discussed how the Imperial Government discredited itself by losing the confidence of the officers. This led to a loss of control over the army and, in the end, to the triumph of the February Revolution of 1917 and the overthrow of the monarchy.

On November 25, 2017, an international academic conference took place in St Petersburg, titled View Across a Century: The October Revolution of 1917 and its Consequences for the History of Religious Life in Russia and Finland. From October 23-24, 2017, the first international academic on the Faroe Islands: History, Culture, and Literature took place at the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The conference saw presentations by linguists and literary scholars on questions related to the Faroe Islands.

Fourth International Festival of Youth and Childrens Choirs, entitled I shall sing unto the Lord in my life

The I shall sing unto the Lord in my life Festival has been taking place for ten years, and this year it was dedicated to the centenary of the Local Council of the Russian Church (1917-18) and the 25th anniversary of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities. This was the first year when the Festival will take place in the historical Moscow Eparchy House building (6 Lihov Lane, Moscow), now the main building of Saint Tikhons Orthodox University of the Humanities. It will be held from November 25 to December 16.
Saint Tikhons University teachers take part in international conference in Poland

From December 13-16, 2017, the tenth annual Conference for Opposing Destructive Sects took place in Suprasl Monastery near Bialystok, Poland. With the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, the Russian Orthodox Church was represented at the forum by Saint Tikhons University professor Alexander Dvorkin.

On September 4-5, 2017, Saint Tikhons University Professor Alexander Dvorkin, D.Phil. and D.Theol., participated in the yearly Orthodox Book Festival in Varna, Bulgaria, where he also held the Bulgarian launch of his book Sectology. This year, the Festival was dedicated to youth problems and youth mission work.

The entrance examinations for the Fall Semester at Saint Tikhons Universitys Institute for Distance Learning have come to an end for the most sought-after courses, the Masters degree in Theology and the Continuing Education course in Fundamentals of Orthodoxy.
